PDE

PDE

“Thanks to PDE, our RO plant ran entirely off-grid for over two years, able to switch seamlessly between the grid and our own PV/battery microgrid. It was the largest installation of its kind in the Caribbean.”
-Rory Purcell, former Director of Engineering, Cuisinart Resort, Anguilla.

Dan CoheeDaniel S. Cohee
Vice President and Partner

Dan leads the design, implementation, integration and construction of advanced energy storage and distributed generation projects for PDE. He designed and implemented the Cuisinart microgrid in the Caribbean. This microgrid powers a reverse osmosis plant, which produces between 250,000 to 300,000 GPD with solar being the sole generation source. It is the largest PV/battery off grid installation of its kind in the region and has been a new model for energy policy and energy delivery in the region. PDE has been retained to design the new 13.8kV 2.5MW microgrid to power the existing resort and new resort and will be the largest off grid microgrid in the Caribbean.

He has led numerous other groundbreaking energy storage and microgrid projects, including:

  • Grid tied lithium ion energy storage and a microgrid installation for a California Municipal Utility which combined solar, fuel cell, clean burning generator, and energy storage
  • The largest military type 2B micro grid in the US at 29 Palms Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center (recognized by Forbes Online as a “Top 12 Energy Project in 2012”)
  • Smart Microgrid project at the Electrical Training Institute, a first of its kind, combining energy storage, solar generation, electrical vehicle charging and building load management in one unit (awarded the 2013 Los Angeles National Electrical Contractor’s Excellence Award)
  • DOE smart microgrid project for Penn State University which combines multiple battery technologies including Nickel Cobalt Manganese chemistry from Enerdel and Advanced Thin Plate Pure Lead Acid from Enersys
  • Port Hueneme off grid PV and flow battery feed forward microgrid for the California Energy Commission to demonstrate how flow batteries can provide demand charge savings, increased renewable generation on military microgrids through ramp rate control, and reliable power during utility outages
  • EPC for the microgrid Test Bed for the US Navy’s Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) at the Port of Ventura, to test emerging battery and power electronic technologies and be a subject of NAVFAC cyber security testing to ensure component compliance with NAVFAC and EPRI DOD security compliance specifications.

Dan attended California State University Long Beach and holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science.

Chip Palombini
Energy Management Systems

Chip Palombini currently leads the Advanced Power Systems Sales (energy storage, inverters, and converters) efforts at Dynapower Company of South Burlington, Vermont. Dynapower is the world’s leading independent manufacturer of power conversion systems for a variety of applications. Prior to leading the sales team, Chip was a research and development engineer and project manager responsible for the development of the first commercially available multi-port solar and storage inverter system. During his work as a development engineer Chip was responsible for power conversion systems for battery energy storage applications, primarily for the integration of large scale distributed renewable generation. These developments have been integral to Dynapower capturing >50% of the domestic energy storage market.

Chip has authored patent applications on unique control, construction and heating power systems. Chip started his career as an electronics engineer at iTherm Technologies LP, an Intellectual Property intensive start-up company where he worked his way into a partnership position shortly before Dynapower acquired iTherm Technologies in 2010.
